Learn How to Play the Game of Soccer

Diverse types of soccer like competitions have been played as far back as the times of the Romans. However, the U.S. was the 1st British colony to beginning participating in soccer games. As far back as 1609 in the Jamestown colony various forms of soccer were being played. In the U.S. soccer refers to the game where you kick the ball into the opposing team’s goal for points. In other countries, soccer is what people in the U.S. would consider football. In mid 2008, several players were inducted into the Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum in Canada.

These players were; Arthur Arnold, John McGrane, William Flinton, Jack Brand, Jimmy Adam, Bruce Twamley, Constantinos Souplotis, Les Wilson and Walter W. Bowman. It’s not only the Americans and Canadians who have a strong soccer history. In fact, much of the world does also. Here is a small list of some of the international soccer competitions that men and women compete in globally; Women’s World Cup, Nordic Cup, World Youth Championship, Futsal World Championship, Pan American Games, World Cup, and the Olympic Soccer Tournament.

Player Positions

In the game of soccer, each team normally has eleven positions and eleven players playing in those positions. However since there are many ways to play the game soccer this isn’t always the case. Generally you will have backs, defenders, forwards, fullbacks, goalies, goalkeeper, midfielders and striker sweepers. Optional positions include; midfield anchor, midfield general, midfield maestro, attacking midfielder, central midfielder, defensive midfielder, finisher, central defender, central forward, halfback, and stoppers.

Soccer Objective

The object of the game of soccer is to kick the ball into the opposing teams goal. This is done by kicking the soccer ball around to other team mates in order to get them into a scoring position. Similar to the sport of basketball in regards to continuous passing, except the feet are to be used instead of the hand. This game demands a lot of physical endurance and mental capabilities in order to win. Players must be sharp enough to know when and where to pass the ball to without it being taken away by rival teams players. Each soccer game last ninety minutes with one fifteen minute break in between each game.

Major League Soccer (MLS)

The MLS was founded in 1993 and has grown to sixteen teams with discussion of adding more teams in the near future. Although they claim sixteen teams, the newly added Philadelphia won’t begin playing until 2010. Here is a list of the Major League Soccer teams; Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, Chivas USA, Columbus Crew, D.C. United, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, Red Bull New York, New England Revolution, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Toronto FC. Each team plays a total of thirty games per year in an attempt to win the MLS Cup.

  3. Well, I am a teenager and I play on a select soccer team now. At first, I started at a really young age and played on cheap soccer teams like recreational. Then select soccer, and moving on to high school soccer.

    The best way to learn skills of a soccer player without a team or coach (although those are the best ways) would be to simply get as many touches as you can on the ball. You have to find some way to develop your skills. Usually players practice with others, or just play some street games for fun.

    Nobody is ever too old to learn to do anything. Hell, you're only 23. There is a keeper in MLS who didn't start playing until he was 20 (forgive me all of you who will dispute this because I cannot come up with his name or team, I just happened to catch the comment while flipping through the other day). Anyway, Id say it didn't turn out so badly for him. Don't listen to the guys who say that you can't be as good as Pele or Zidane. I'm not saying you will be, but you could discover a natural gift for it.

    To learn, watch as much as you can. Buy a ball, find a park and go kick around. Maybe you'll get a pickup game dropped on your lap. Like one of the other answers said, it really is all about fun.

  5. Its never too late. If you want a couple of tips what I would suggest is to practice kick-ups (keeping the ball in the air and not letting it bounce) and passing the ball against a wall using both of your feet. If you practice these and stick at it your ball control will improve lots and lots.

  7. I don't think sports' the reason why other countries hate the US. I think they hate it because of Bush and a war that has killed so many innocent people, it's going nowhere and still thinks he can win it

    Hi it is never to late, I started playing soccer when I was in 7 grade and I almost become a professionla soccer player. The best way to start is by learning the fundamental of soccer and later by practice every day. So just go out in the field and play. Learn how to kick the ball. ho to recieve the ball etc.

  9. After reading all that information about the different exercises for soccer players, you’re probably wondering how you can combine them into a routine for yourself. Well, if you are, then read on and take a look at some of the examples listed below. But remember, don’t be afraid to make modifications to your regimen. Each player is different! And if you have questions, consult a coach or trainer. Good luck!

    You can modify this schedule to what fits you best, as long as you incorporate all of these elements frequently. But it’s a good idea to avoid strength training your legs every day so that they have a chance to recover and rebuild the muscle fibers. On the days you’re not doing plyometrics, you can still weight train, but focus on the upper body. As for what and how much to work, try this workout, three sets each.

    Day 1–> Stretching–> Sprints –> Plyometrics –> Weights (lower) –> Ball work –> Stretching

    Day 2 –> Stretching –> Balance –> Shuttle run –> Sit-ups –> Pushups –> Weights (upper) –> Stretching

    Day 3 –> Stretching –> Distance run –> Sprints –> Ball work –> Stretching

    Day 4 –> Stretching –> Shuttle run –> Sit-ups –> Pushups –> Plyometrics –> Weights (lower) –> Stretching

    Day 5 –> Stretching –> Balance –> Weights (upper) –> Distance run –> Sprint –> Ball work –> Stretching

    Day 6–> Stretching –> Shuttle run –> Sit-ups –> Pushups –> Weights (optional) –> Stretching

    Day 7–> Off

    Upper body: Benchpress –> pec-fly/butterfly –> incline press –> lat pulldown –> compound row –> tricep extensions (cables or dumbbells) –> dips –> bicep curls –> concentration curls

    Lower body: squats or leg press –> leg extension –> leg curls –> lunges –> abs –> calf raises

    Also, you shouldn’t do plyometrics on a day you do long distance running. You don’t want to overexert your legs and possibly injure yourself. If the routine above gets boring, switch it up a bit to what best fits your body.

    Balance exercises can easily be added to your training. Since most of these tend not to require a lot of physical strength and endurance, do them on a less strenuous day, or at a time of day when you feel your legs can handle them (preferably the morning).

    TIP: You can never do enough ball work! Make sure to get plenty of this in your daily routines, whether it’s through regularly scheduled practice or by working it further into your training regimen.

    Besides looking into your YMCA and rec centers, also look for a organization in the area called the AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) I would imagine it would be available in your area, we have it in the hick town I'm from (LOL) anyway the reason I recommend it, is because they are completely volunteer run organization that encourages parental involvement. At least they are here (small town MN) They are less competitive at that young of an age and focus more on team play, rules of the game, and having fun. My son joined last summer when he was six and loved it, my husband and I both coached and we had a great time as well and we got to be involved in something that our son really liked, it was great for our family.
